You can’t do that, the voice in my head whispered as I gazed up at the water slide. It was summer and friends had invited me over to a local water park. And this summer lovin’ girl didn’t waste any time accepting that invitation…
Now, I was staring at the biggest water slide in the park and all I could think about was showing my fear who was boss. I pushed myself forward and joined the waiting line with the other water park guests.
When I was finally at the top of the slide, I took a deep breath. The line behind me was so thick I couldn’t have left the spot, even if I’d tried. There was only one thing to do…sit down and enjoy the ride.
The slide was twisty, reminding me of all those park adventures I’d had as a kid. Despite my nervousness, I laughed on the way down. After about thirty seconds, I shot from the slide into the shallow end of the pool.
I took me a moment to find my footing and re-orient myself. But as soon as I did, I got back in line for the slide. By the end of the day, I’d been on the slide a dozen or so times.
Here’s the thing though: I’m really afraid of heights (and that slide was probably a good 10 feet in the air) and I really hate going underwater (I’m all of 5’2 and that shallow end was 5 feet deep).
So, why’d I do it?
Because I didn’t want to be afraid anymore. I was tired of being caged and tired of letting fear mock me.
